Saint Paul Institute and Saint Francois Technical High School successfully host “Bishop Olivier’s Friendly Cup 2026”

The sports program at Saint Paul Institute (SPI) has officially concluded with resounding success, leaving behind a vibrant atmosphere filled with energy, unity, and genuine celebration. On May 1, 2026, Saint Paul Institute, in collaboration with Saint Francois Private Technical and General High School, proudly served as the host for the highly anticipated “Bishop Olivier’s Friendly Cup 2026.” The event brought together approximately 1,300 enthusiastic participants, including dedicated athletes and passionate supporters from across the region.

This year’s tournament showcased exceptional community engagement, featuring a total of 53 sports teams representing 18 diverse institutions and communities. Participants included delegations from the Catholic Vicariate of Phnom Penh, partner non-governmental organizations, local high schools across Takeo province, current university students, alumni, faculty and staff, priests, and major seminarians. Competitors put their athletic skills and teamwork to the test across four featured sports disciplines: Football, Volleyball, Basketball, and Pétanque (Boules). This marks the 6th edition of the tournament jointly organized and hosted by Saint Paul Institute and Saint Francois Technical High School.

Delivering the official welcoming address on behalf of the host institutions, Dr. Phon Sophal, Director of Saint Paul Institute, reminded all athletes and spectators of the fundamental core of sportsmanship. He highlighted how athletic engagement serves as a powerful bridge to foster physical well-being, lasting friendship, fraternity, and peace among diverse groups. Dr. Phon Sophal urged all participants to keep the official event theme at the heart of their performance: “Sportsmanship for Peace, Cooperation, and Development.”

In his opening and closing addresses, Bishop Olivier Schmitthaeusler, Apostolic Vicar of Phnom Penh, Founder and Chancellor of Saint Paul Institute emphasized the paramount importance of solidarity and shared effort in athletic pursuits. He noted that the sports featured in the tournament rely heavily on effective teamwork, mutual understanding, and strong interpersonal communication. He encouraged everyone present to use the event as an opportunity to deepen their spirit of collaboration and empathy, while also urging participants to maintain regular exercise routines to ensure personal health and overall prosperity in their professional lives.

The management of Saint Paul Institute extends its heartfelt appreciation to the SPI organizing committee, sports delegation leaders, local clergy, high school directors, district police authorities, and all student volunteers.
